ASCII Table

DecHexBinaryChar

How to read this table: find the character in the Char column and read its decimal, hex and binary codes across the row. Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters that don’t print — for example 10 is LF (line feed) and 13 is CR (carriage return). Printable text starts at 32 (space); digits run 48–57, uppercase letters 65–90 and lowercase 97–122.

How to read the ASCII table

  1. Find the character you need in the Char column.
  2. Read across for its decimal, hex and binary code.
  3. Codes 0–31 and 127 are control characters (shown by name, e.g. LF = line feed).

Example: "A" = 65 = 41₁₆ = 1000001₂.

ASCII in code

Python

ord('A')  # → 65
chr(65)   # → 'A'

JavaScript

'A'.charCodeAt(0);       // → 65
String.fromCharCode(65); // → 'A'

C

#include <stdio.h>

int main(void) {
    printf("%d\n", 'A');  /* → 65 */
    printf("%c\n", 65);   /* → A */
    return 0;
}

Common values

  • A = 65 (41₁₆)
  • a = 97 (61₁₆)
  • 0 = 48 (30₁₆)
  • space = 32 (20₁₆)
  • newline (LF) = 10
  • DEL = 127

Key takeaways

  • ASCII assigns numbers 0–127 to characters; it is a 7-bit code.
  • ‘A’ = 65, ‘a’ = 97, ‘0’ = 48, space = 32.
  • Codes 0–31 and 127 are non-printing control characters.
  • UTF-8’s first 128 codes are identical to ASCII.

Frequently asked questions

What is ASCII?

ASCII is a 7-bit code that assigns numbers 0–127 to characters — the basis of text on computers.

What is the ASCII code for 'A'?

'A' is 65 in decimal, 41 in hex.

What are ASCII control characters?

Codes 0–31 and 127 don't print — they control devices and text flow, e.g. 10 (LF) is line feed, 27 (ESC) is escape.

What is the ASCII code for ‘a’?

‘a’ is 97 in decimal (61 in hex).

What is the difference between ASCII and UTF-8?

ASCII covers 128 characters; UTF-8 extends it and is backward compatible — the first 128 UTF-8 codes are identical to ASCII.

What is ASCII 32?

32 is the space character.

Why does ASCII stop at 127?

ASCII is a 7-bit code, so 2⁷ = 128 is the maximum number of codes it can hold.
